The History of Skittles

The game of skittles is a traditional pub and bar game in many European countries and is thought to have originated in Germany in the 3rd or 4th Century. Well established in England by the 14th Century the game of kayles (derived from the French "quilles") where players threw sticks or cudgels at a line of pins, was a popular pasttime throughout the land. Seen as a distraction to good order and religious activities, the authorities under Edward III sought to ban the game by including it on a list of condemned amusements. The popularity of the game persisted, however, with indoor and table versions of skittles being widely played. Indeed in 1857 Thomas Hughes wrote in his novel "Tom Brown's School Days" that "life isn't all beer and skittles; but beer and skittles, or something of the same sort, must form a good part of every Englishman's education".
